Happiness Is Not Doing What You Want But Wanting What You Do

Happiness, that very subjective concept that is often instilled in us from an early age, can be considered more of a lifestyle than a goal or objective to be achieved. We explain the importance of living in the present to achieve it.
Happiness is not doing what you want but wanting what you do

We often confuse happiness with what we want, fulfilling our dreams and reaching our goals. We think that we will be very happy the day we have this or that, since we yearn for it with all our might, and our life seems to have no meaning without that something that is not yet in our hands.

To those who think that you will be happier in a future day, I ask you, what about the present? That is, you are not living tomorrow, because that will come within 24 hours. You are not breathing in the past either, because it happened yesterday or longer. You are here, in the present, reading this right now. Don’t you think your happiness should be with you right now?

Do what you do to be happy

A very ingrained thought in today’s societies is related to possession. We believe that having will make us happier. The more money you have, or more goods, or more children, or more space in your house … However, this does not make us happier, quite the opposite.

In reality, happiness is related to being, and not to having. The more you get out of life, the better and happier person you can be, but it is something that does not come from consumerism, but from love, friendship, solidarity, understanding or affinity.

You are not happier the more you have, but you are the better you are. That is to say, if you focus everything you do in life to be the person you want, taking what you have, and behaving as your heart tells you in reality that you are, you will find a much brighter and happier path in life.

Those who have more are not happier, but those who need the least

Again I approach the famous saying that says that ” it is not happier who has more, but who needs the least. ” In this sense, I would like to make a little reflection, which always comes to mind when I hear this celebrated saying.

If your life focuses on obtaining wealth, and becoming more powerful every day, I can assure you right now that you will never be able to find happiness. A compulsive obsession with being bigger and wealthier every day only makes you want more every moment, producing a great feeling of emptiness, because it feeds back and reverberates in the need to have more and more with each passing hour. You will never be really satisfied with what you have.

However, if you decide to live in the present, enjoying what little you have, because in reality, it is what you need, you will feel how your life is much fuller and happier. You have what you want, and you gradually achieve your goals.

In your heart is the key to your happiness

In reality, each one knows in his heart what it is he needs to be happy. But think that everything you do should be destined to this procedure. Your job, your family, your friends, your possessions, your life …

In general, a family united by love and affection finds happiness every day of its life. However, those attached to possession, control and toxic relationships, all they achieve is an empty, difficult existence, full of disenchantment and resentment.

Love and being yourself help you to be happier

Love is a great contribution to happiness. Have you noticed when you walk in love that you seem unable to step on the ground? You feel that everything is possible, that you don’t need anything, that everything is beautiful, pretty and wonderful.

Generosity and solidarity are two virtues that go well with happy people. They feel good about helping others, both known and unknown. They advise and support without expecting anything in return, since they already have what they need.

Are you willing to find happiness? Well, stop looking for it in money, and start with the people who are by your side and love you. Only by being yourself and enjoying the process will you achieve the happiness that you long for, but that perhaps now resists you because one day you missed the road. Forget having, and think about being.
