Lack Of Internal Communication In The Company

Lack of internal communication in the company

The digital age in which we live has brought with it a great number of advantages and advances, but also a series of difficulties of its own that must be overcome if we want our company to function properly. One of the most important is the lack of internal communication.

Internal communication is the process by which the different components of the company transmit information between them. Through this process, the people who have to collaborate to carry out the different tasks are able to coordinate and create a situation of synergy.

However, on some occasions, relationships within the company suffer from a lack of internal communication, limiting both the company’s results and the well-being of the employees. In this article we will study the causes of this phenomenon so that you can avoid it within your work.

Lack of internal communication: what exactly is it?

Internal communication is a process that must occur at different levels within a company for its flow to give the best results. Some of the most important types of communication that need to occur are as follows:

  • Communication for decision making. The managers of the company have to know exactly what their employees are doing, in such a way that they can know all the information necessary to make adapted decisions. This applies to both company directors and middle managers.
  • Coordination between departments. Because in large companies the different departments are interrelated, communication between them is essential. Those responsible for each of the sectors must know what the others are doing in order to carry out their work effectively.
  • Equipment operation. In a smaller setting, team members must have all the information; both about your project and what the company is doing in general. In this way, work engagement and worker efficiency are promoted.

However, on some occasions these three types of communication do not occur or do not flow in the proper way. Those responsible for carrying it out may decide to transmit the information through messages that are too short or use inappropriate means, such as social networks. It may also be the case that there is no direct communication channel between the different members of the company.

On the other hand, sometimes there is a desire to communicate between the different parts of a company, but these simply do not have the necessary social skills to develop it correctly. Sometimes people need to learn to develop their communication skills before they can use them effectively.

In all these cases, there will be a problem of lack of internal communication within the company. This will cause both the results and the well-being of the employees to deteriorate; and therefore, any company should try to improve their internal communication if they detect that there is a problem with it.

But is it something that has no solution? Or, on the contrary, is there a way for companies to improve in this regard ?

How to work the lack of communication in companies?

Next we will study the three most important steps a company can take to solve its internal communication problems.

1- Make the vision and mission of the company clear

All companies are governed by a mission and by a series of particular values, which can be implicit or explicit. But at times,  employees may be unclear about what they are, preventing a deep understanding of the purpose of their work.

Therefore, when employees are able to understand the goals, mission and values of the company, they will be able to communicate more effectively with each other. It will be as if they were doing it on the same page, sharing a common hierarchy of priorities.

2- Improve relationships between members of the company

Although it is important to separate personal from professional life, the truth is that improving relationships with colleagues and bosses within a company brings many benefits. Not only does it increase job satisfaction and company climate, but it helps internal company communication become clearer.

Therefore, carrying out activities that strengthen ties between the employees of a company can be one of the best investments made for the present and future of the same.

3- Teaches to improve social skills

We mentioned earlier that  some people don’t communicate more effectively simply because they don’t know how. Therefore, if you detect that this may be happening within your company, a good idea may be to propose a seminar or workshop on social skills.

In this way,  employees will learn to communicate more effectively, which will root out many of the problems that lack of internal communication creates.
